A garage door can weigh several hundred pounds, move multiple times a day, and sit directly above your car, tools, and family. That is why a garage door safety inspection checklist is not just another home maintenance task. A quick monthly check can catch a damaged cable, weak spring, failing opener, or loose hardware before it turns into a stuck door or a dangerous repair.
You do not need to take the door apart to perform a useful inspection. In fact, homeowners should leave high-tension parts such as springs and cables alone. The goal is to look, listen, and test the door’s basic safety features, then call a qualified garage door technician when something does not look right.
Garage Door Safety Inspection Checklist
Set aside 10 to 15 minutes when the garage is well lit and the door can move freely. Keep children, pets, and vehicles clear of the area while you inspect and test the system.
1. Watch the door run through a full cycle
Start inside the garage with the door closed. Use the wall button to open and close it, and watch the entire path of travel. The door should move smoothly without jerking, shaking, scraping, or stopping halfway.
Listen closely, too. A little operating noise is normal, especially with an older steel door. Grinding, popping, loud squealing, or a hard bang is not. Those sounds may point to worn rollers, loose hardware, a track issue, or a problem with the opener or springs.

This test matters because the reversal system helps protect children, pets, and anything left in the doorway. Do not use a soft item like a towel or cardboard for this test. The opener may not detect it consistently.
6. Check the photo-eye sensors
The photo-eye sensors are the small units mounted near the bottom of each side of the garage door opening. They send an invisible beam across the doorway. If that beam is blocked, the door should not close using the remote or wall control.
Wipe each sensor lens gently with a clean, dry cloth. Make sure both sensors are firmly mounted, facing each other, and not blocked by storage items, cobwebs, or landscaping debris. Look at the bottom weather seal and the perimeter seal around the opening. Torn, brittle, flattened, or missing weather stripping lets in rain, pollen, pests, hot summer air, and cold winter drafts. Confirm that the emergency release cord is visible and accessible, but high enough that children cannot pull it.
